Adjustable EQ and compressor for phone call quality control

UX concept

I'm hearing impaired and have to be on the phone a lot. I've tried a number of products intended to improve the quality of the sound during calls, but have not found anything that really worked.

I typically use ear buds while talking on the phone, which allows me to hear the conversation in both ears and block out surrounding noises. But, I often have to participate in conference calls with people using various devices with varying quality.

The devices used by meeting participants can vary quite a bit and the volume and clarity of the voices can make understanding people quite a challenge for someone who is impaired. I wanted to come up with a solution based on my experience.

What I have designed is a simple EQ/compression app that helps bring more clarity to phone calls. Currently, it is my understanding that telecommunication companies will not allow such apps, but as someone searching for a solution, this would be my simple answer.

1. Case study

This was a simple exercise in problem solving and concept design. Two page interface options for either a simple or more complex EQ adjustment.

2. Result

Although telecommunication companies do not allow any altering of their signal, this serves as a functional option should there be a time when such apps are allowed.

3. Experience

This was a great oppotunity to consider the possibilities of improving established technology for greater quality and access for people with disabilities.
